Regina George was all wrong in telling Gretchen Wieners to stop trying to make "fetch" happen. We support you, Gretchen, because October 17th is National Fetch Day! Aside from our obvious love for the movie Mean Girls and the 100's of quotable moments it graced us with, fetch holds a special place in our hearts for a whole other reason.
Fetch provides our best friends a great outlet for exercise, mental stimulation, quality time with their humans, and the opportunity to just be a dog. Check out these reasons why making fetch happen is so important both today and everyday!
Exercise
We all know that an overweight dog is not a happy dog. With that being said, the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention's clinical survey shows that over half of our nation's dogs are classified as overweight or obese! Playing fetch with your dog is the perfect way to get them some ample exercise and combat this alarming statistic. Plus, it gets you up and moving as well! A win-win for both of you.
Mental Stimulation
Dogs need both physical and mental enrichment to really thrive. Fetch engages your dog mentally by encouraging them to locate the toy that was thrown for them, while taking in all of the sights and smells along the way. You can create more of a challenge for your dog by throwing the toy to a different spot in the yard each time. Keep them guessing so it's more engaging for them and more entertaining for you to watch.
Build Your Bond
You and your dog are best friends, so, being together naturally makes both of you as happy as can be! Playing fetch together is a great way to spend some quality time and strengthen the bond between you and your pup. Interacting with your dog by playing games builds both trust and your overall relationship.
