Cats are fickle creatures, wanting snuggles and cuddles one moment and then biting at your hand the next. Despite their aloof attitudes, window staring, and demands for the “royal treatment,” they are a popular pet companion. According to the ASPCA, 35% of U.S. households own a cat, which equals approximately 85.8 million cats! The American Veterinary Medical Foundation did a study in 2012, finding that the average household owns 2 cats. While more households own dogs, cats exceed dogs in number per house.

For those of you who fall into this feline furball loving category, here are some of our “Top Five” lists in cat trends for all of the cats across America in 2017.

Top 5 Breeds

After doing extensive research comparing multiple lists from places like Catster.com, Cattime.com, and PetMD.com, we've put together the top five breeds that appeared across the board.

  • Maine Coon - This cat comes in 75 different color combinations! Despite such a large variety, the most common Maine Coons are tabbies.
  • Ragamuffin - This a relative of the Ragdoll, just as floppy and affectionate as its cousin. These unique cats are born white and gain their color as they age. The variety of color combinations is endless.
  • Ragdoll - Born and bred in California, the Ragdoll is a floppy, loveable companion that wants nothing more than to cuddle on your lap. Most have stunning blue eyes, but some will turn blue-green or gold as they age. Colors include Lilac, Blue, Red, Chocolate, Cream, and Seal.
  • Persian - These are most commonly thought of as the “flat-faced” cat, but that is only one type of Persian. Doll-faced Persians also exist in this breed, which is similar in shape to other cats and come in a variety of colors.
  • American Shorthair - The American Shorthair is the animal most think of when picturing a cat. They are cousins to their precursor, the British Shorthair. While tabby combinations are the most common, they can also be Calico, Tortoiseshell, or solid Orange, Gray, Black, etc.
