Here at Jolly Pets, we have an extremely soft spot for rescue pups and the humans who selflessly look out for them. The last few months of each year are very important for these pups in need since October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, November is Adopt a Senior Dog Month, and December begins the universal season of giving. These big months for rescue dogs, coupled with the holidays fast approaching, are more than enough motivation to get these dogs into loving homes.

Are you interested in adopting or helping out shelter dogs in need, but don't know where to start? Well, Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center in Blackwood, NJ has got you covered! Through education, community outreach, and an unmatched rescue and foster program, Homeward Bound really goes the extra mile so that every animal in their care receives the happy ending that they deserve.

About Homeward Bound

Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center is the largest open admission shelter in the region, serving more than 5,000 abused, homeless, and neglected animals, annually. They offer low cost vaccinations for owned pets, spay/neuter surgeries for community cats, and work with local county officials to ensure the health and safety of homeless and feral companion animals. Homeward Bound has achieved a 92% save rate for the last three years through an innovative mix of community TNR (trap, neuter, release), a robust foster program, and a more holistic adoption process that focuses on consultation and humane education.

How Homeward Bound is a True Community Hero

During a time when organizations like Homeward Bound could really use some extra help from their community, they turned the tables and graciously opened their arms to provide assistance to their community, instead.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Homeward Bound has sought to help the community in its growing need for economic assistance. Besides continuing to offer the low-cost clinic options for continued preventative care for owned pets, they also expanded their Pet Pantry from 4x a year, to every single week. Homeward Bound knows firsthand the cost of food, litter, treats, and toys. So, to help families who have been affected by COVID-19, they provide these items, free of charge, every Saturday from 11am-1pm.

Also, as an open admission shelter, Homeward Bound routinely takes in animals injured in car accidents, dogs rescued from local dog fighting rings, and ailing pets who's owners can't afford medical care. They work very hard to provide a happily ever after for ALL of these pets, going so far as to invest shelter resources into behavior modification programs, state-of-the-art medical care, and good old fashioned TLC. All animals deserve a shot at having a good life, and thanks to the incredibly talented staff and volunteers at Homeward Bound, the animals that come through their door have an amazing shot at it.

Their Adoptable Dogs

Now let's get into the true heart of Homeward Bound, their adorable and ADOPTABLE residents. Check out these six heartthrobs and try not to adopt them all (but we won't judge you if you do).

Big Handsome

Big Handsome is a strong 8-year-old boy who is looking to have fun! He is great on walks and prefers a mature family.

Donnie

Donnie is an 8-year-old slick boy looking for a home where he can shine the brightest. He would rather live in a house with no kids or pets.

Oreo

Oreo the 4-year-old sweetheart wants to find her cuddle buddy. She likes living in a house with no pets so you can focus on her all day!

Reed

This 4-year-old pup is called Reed. He can't show his true colors in our shelters, but take him out and you will see what a good boy he really is!

Cookie

Bring home your own Cookie (monster)! This 9-year-old would rather stay home and eat peanut butter cookies all day long!

Blue

Big ol' Blue loves his food and you! Being 8-years-old does not affect how much love he can still give to you!

Don't see one on this list that will fit into your family? Not to worry! There's plenty more where they came from on the Homeward Bound website.

What You Can do to Help

For organizations like Homeward Bound, the giving never stops. They give to the animals and to their community no matter what the circumstance. So, it's only fair that we do our part to give back to them as well. You can help out Homeward Bound by gifting them a monetary donation via their website, a product/food donation (they are always on the lookout for wet dog and cat food, especially during the height of kitten season which is typically June-October), or by volunteering your time. For other ways to help, you can reach out to Homeward Bound, here!

We'd like to personally thank Homeward Bound for the stellar work they do and a special thanks to Gina DiMarco in helping us put this piece together. Because of you, there are a lot more Jolly Dogs who are getting a second chance at life.
