Do you need to spend some quality time with your cat? Maybe the endless meows or destroyed sneakers are a hint that it’s time for a night in. Snuggle up on the sofa with a bowl of popcorn (and some cat treats) and your kitty companion for a feline flick. Cats have been starring in movies since Felix the Cat hit the silent stage in the 1920s. And whilst Felix has moved on to comic strip fame, he has left behind a robust cat movie industry.
If you're looking for family-friendly feline entertainment, the choices are almost endless. Stuart Little didn't always cast cats in the best light, but Milo & Otis, The Aristocats, and That Darn Cat are quite redeeming for the often misunderstood species. In these films, the cats really are the brains of the operation! Recent releases even feature Garfield and Puss in Boots, both of which have over-the-top cat attitude (cat-ittude, if you will). But the pièce de résistance of the G-rated cat genre is The Cat Returns. The Cat Returns is a brilliant Japanese Anime film from the famed Studio Ghibli. The feature follows a high school student as she tries to fend off the attention of a Cat King who wants to thank her for rescuing a cat prince. Just try not to love a total cat kingdom!
Some of our personal favorites are also the Secret Life of Petsand Bolt,which feature some pretty brave animated cats. Not to mention, Mrs. Norris in Harry Potter deserves a rewatch.
More mature audiences can enjoy cat movies such as Meet the Fockers, featuring Robert De Niro and his bold love for the family cat, or Keanustarring comedy duo Key and Peele. In Keanu, comedian Jordan Peele is swept off his feet by love for a new cat that is promptly stolen. While humorous cat abduction is mildly scary, truly terrifying cat tales abound as well. If you and your cat want to cling to each other in fear, try watching Pet Cemetery or Cat's Eye.Both of these terrific tales were imagined by the king of horror, Stephen King, and feature some really creepy kitties.
Although, the quintessential cat movie might just be Breakfast at Tiffany's. Audrey Hepburn's relationship with her unnamed cat isn't the focus of the film, but it is certainly the lynchpin of the story. So, if you need an excuse to spend an evening with the significant cat in your life, find a film that will suit you both and get to petting!
