Covid-19 is the topic on all of our minds lately, and as we go through life trying to navigate this new normal, it is easy to forget that pets can be just as impacted as we are. Like any natural disaster, our local animal shelters are feeling the heat and will need a little extra support. However, unlike a normal natural disaster, this one is not regionally specific. Covid-19 has impacted the entire world and it is our job as a community to do our part in helping each other through this trying time. Here are a number of ways that you can help ease the burden on animal shelters around you!

Adopt

Adopting is and always will be the absolute best way to help any animal shelter. The more animals that are adopted, the more space the shelter has to help other animals in need. Especially during a time when shelters all over are experiencing an upswing in owners surrendering their pets.

Foster

Not able to take on the long-term commitment of adopting? Fostering is the next best thing! Providing a temporary home to a shelter critter in need frees up some much needed space for other animals to seek refuge.

Donate

If opening your home isn't an option, then opening your wallet is a great way to show support! Donating money, food, toys, treats, and other supplies really helps to ease the financial strain that many shelters are experiencing right now.

Volunteer

Whats even more valuable than money? Your time. Even though shelters are closed to the public, the resident animals still need to be cared for. If you are healthy and able, volunteering your time to shelters in dire need of an extra hand could really make a huge difference.

Represent

For many of us, social media is the only way we are truly able to socialize at this time. Use that to your advantage by liking, following, sharing, and posting about your local shelter on your social media accounts. Bringing some extra traffic to their accounts and websites can help them gain more donations, volunteers, eligible homes, and other needed support.

Community Outreach

Families all over are struggling, and when money is tight, some families have to make the difficult decision of parting ways with their pets. Be conscious of your neighbors and loved ones, especially the elderly and health-compromised ones. If one of them is experiencing difficulty providing for their pets, offering supplies or a temporary foster home until they are back on their feet could make a world of difference. This both reduces shelter intake as well as helps out your neighbor who surely doesn't want to say goodbye to their furry friends.

These are just a couple of ways that you can lend a hand to shelters in your area, but we encourage you to get creative! Each shelter could have a number of different needs, so be mindful of that and use your imagination. Or simply reach out to your local shelter and ask what they need and how you can help. Remember that even though we are apart, we can still come together as a community by doing our part to help each other and the animals in any way we are able to. Every little bit helps!
