Hollywood is full of many superstars of all kinds. Famous actors come in all shapes, sizes, AND species! While most human actors are well-known, and even dog actors get their own awards, not as much recognition is given to the cats who bring some of our favorite four-legged characters to life. Let’s look at five famous cats in Hollywood and the superstars who played them.
Any Austin Powers fan will recognize the name Mr. Bigglesworth, the legendary sphinx cat of Dr. Evil. That cat was played by a sphinx cat named Ted Nude-Gent. Sphinx cats are some of the more trainable cats and very affectionate. Ted Nude-Gent would often be seen taking naps in the lap of Mike Myers between takes.
Orangey is the only feline double-winner of the PATSY Award, an award given to animal stars in movies and television shows. Orangey had roles in multiple movies like Rhubarb and Breakfast at Tiffany’s where he starred alongside Audrey Hepburn. Orangey was trained by animal trainer Frank Inn. Orangey was a very particular cat (as most cats are) and would only show up for filming when he wanted to act. Even with a classic superstar attitude, Orangey still managed to win two PATSY awards for his work.
Bob was a stray cat whose heartwarming story eventually turned into a movie. When Bob wandered into the home of his soon-to-be owner, a homeless ex drug addict, the two changed each other's lives. Their story turned into a book and that book turned into a movie called A Street Cat Named Bob. Bob was able to play himself in the movie about his life. Turning him from a stray cat to a famous actor!
For one of the most famous cats in Hollywood, it took four cats (and some animatronics) to bring him to life! Salem from the show Sabrina the Teenage Witch was a famous talking cat. To make him work on the show, the crew set up an animatronic puppet they could use for some scenes, but also had several cats running around to help film the action shots and to help inspire realism for the animatronic. The cats were named Salem (same as the character), Witch, Elvis, and Warlock (who went on to star in other productions). Each cat had its own specialty on set—Witch was the go-to for action stunts, while Elvis excelled at staying perfectly in place. All these cats helped bring the character Salem to life.
While this cat does not have an official name, he plays one of the most iconic cats ever thrown into a movie. The cat in The Godfather that Marlon Brando pets was not originally supposed to be in the movie at all. The stray was found on set and picked up by director Francis Ford Coppola and placed in Brando’s hands without a word. Brando holds the cat in his lap and pets it during filming. The scene became extremely well-known. Although the cat did not have a name or an official role in the script, he impacted Hollywood in a major way.
