The third Saturday of every August is recognized as International Homeless Animals Day since it’s founding by the International Society for Animal Rights. It’s a day dedicated to spreading awareness of homeless pets everywhere, from the streets to those living in shelters.

Street life is hard for any animal. There is no guarantee for shelter, food, or treatment for medical issues. Shelters can offer these things but come with stress from overpopulation and in some cases, euthanasia. This can be difficult for any pet owner to think about, and you might be wondering, “What can I do?”

Here are 5 ways you can help both shelter dogs and other homeless animals now.

1. Spay and Neuter

One of the best ways you can help both shelter dogs and homeless animals is to spay and neuter. Spaying and neutering decreases overpopulation and helps keep overcrowding within the community and in shelters down. A decrease in overpopulation also means that there is less competition for resources and less risk of disease spreading between animals. In addition, many shelters and vet clinics will microchip pets during a spay or neuter, which helps keeps animals and their owners together if they get separated.

2. Adopt or Foster

Adopting or fostering a dog from a shelter helps animals everywhere in multiple ways. Firstly, you’re giving them a loving forever home, which is the end goal for any pet that ends up in the shelter. Secondly, you’re freeing up space to allow stray animals a place to go until they, too, can be adopted. Lastly, you’re saving a life, especially when you adopt from places that still implement euthanasia.

3. Be proactive in your community

Being a part of adopt-a-thons, microchip clinics, and other events in your community can help spread awareness of shelters and homeless animals. Helping to find sponsors, donations, and organizing events can be a huge, especially since many of these events are made up of non-profits and other volunteers.

4. Donate

If you can’t adopt or be a part of your next community adoption event, donating is a great way to help dogs in need. Donations don’t have to be money, either! Many shelters have a wish list located on their website that outlines specific shelter needs which often includes toys, unopened food, and blankets. Rescue groups who work with helping homeless dogs can also benefit from these things, so take some time and research local rescue groups in your area.

 5. Go social

Don’t underestimate the power of social media. In a digital world, the fastest way to spread information is through the internet. Take advantage of platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to share adoptable pets and helpful ways people can get involved in helping homeless animals. Social media has become a great tool for shelters to not only get their organizations out there, but also find homes for animals that are seen as ‘less adoptable’.

Each person can take an active part in helping shelter dogs and ending animal homelessness. Start or join a conversation with rescue groups or other animal rights activists to find out other ways you can start making a difference today!
