Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated in many parts of the world, especially by Irish communities and organizations. Many people wear an item of green clothing, attend parties featuring Irish food, and consume drinks that are dyed with green food coloring as part of this celebration. It is easy to include your pup in all the festivities, whether it be dressing your dog in a green sweater or buying them a special green toy for the occasion! One goodie that is sure to bring some luck are these Shamrock Dog treats, that are based on the flavors of the traditional Irish-American dinner of corned beef and cabbage!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tablespoon parsley
  • 1 tablespoon grated carrots
  • 2 tablespoons flaxseed oil
  • ½ cup low-sodium beef broth
  • Parchment paper
  • Shamrock cookie cutter

Directions:

  1. Mix flour, carrots, and parsley together in a mixer.
  2. Add flaxseed oil and mix.
  3. Add beef broth; mix until all dry ingredients are moistened.
  4. Roll dough out on the floured surface to a 1/8” thick sheet.
  5. Cut into shamrocks using a cookie cutter.
  6. Place on a cookie sheet, lined with parchment paper.
  7. Bake at 375 for 15-20 minutes.

Makes about 10-15 cookies, depending on the size of the shamrock.

Even though these treats are based on the flavors of the traditional Irish- American dinner, in order to keep your pup safe it is important to make sure they do not ingest some of the more dangerous Saint Patrick's Day staples.

What to Avoid:

  • Corned Beef; although tasty for humans, can cause digestive issues for animals.
  • Alcohol; alcohol, including beer, can be poisonous to dogs even in small amounts.
  • Green Dyes; commercial food coloring may cause severe stomach pain or an allergic reaction.
  • Shamrock Plants; shamrock plants contain dangerous toxins that may be poisonous if ingested.
